Blackhead Removal — How To Get Rid Of Blackheads?

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

Blackheads are small ‘plugs’ that develop in the pores of the skin. They are caused when the over active sebaceous (oil producing) glands in the skin become clogged with oil. This sebum then begins to harden in the pore. Since skin pores are open to the air, the top part of the hardened sebum or oil oxidizes, turning black. This black top of the oil plug is then forced closer to the surface of skin by the oil hardening beneath it. This then causes the blackhead to be visible.

It is not clearly understood why the sebaceous glands begin to become overactive. It is often noted that this situation begins at puberty, and may stop at the end of puberty leading to the conclusion that it is hormonally controlled. For some people this is not the case however, and they may continue to experience blackheads and whiteheads well past puberty and into adulthood. Whiteheads are formed the same way as blackheads with the exception that the pore is closed and the oxidation does not occur.

Acne results from infection of the oil gland due to the blockage by the blackhead. Preventing and removing blackheads helps to control acne.

Blackhead Removal

The following are some tips for removing blackheads:

- Keep the skin as clean and oil free as possible. Use natural or chemically prepared cleansers, astringent solutions or masks to accomplish this. Avoid harsh soaps that may irritate the skin or any creams that leave an oily finish.
- Use a gentle exfoliant to keep the dead cells off your skin and away from the pore openings.
- Avoid harsh squeezing or scraping at the blackhead. Excessive squeezing can damage the skin surround the pore and can actually increase the size of the pore leading to more blackheads in the future.
- A warm compress of water applied to the area of the blackhead followed by a very, very gentle pressure can help in clearing the clog from the pore.
- Commercial ‘blackhead strips’ which are basically a tape like substance that is placed over the nose and then pulled off will remove some blackheads that are at the surface.

How to treat sunburn

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Sunburn should be treated before it happens, when it might and after it does happen. This can be in winter or in summer, on land or on water, wherever direct sun or highly reflected light may reach and therefore threaten bare skin.

Sunburn should be treated for the healing of current sunburn pain, skin damage and potential skin cancer as well as to prevent further sunburn. Here are the several ways we may do this.

Use Aloe Vera.

Aloe Vera comes from the aloe vera plant and may be squeezed from its leaves. Purchasing and learning to care for an Aloe Vera plant through the summer can be a wonderfully relieving investment. This healthful moisturizer is frequently used for sunburn and is applied to the affected areas of the skin as a rub to re-moisturize the dried and burnt surfaces. You can also purchase aloe vera creams and ointments that may include other moisturizers or treatments for dry or burned skin.

General Moisturizers.

A general skin moisturizer such as Noxzema can be applied to sun burned areas to cool and sooth the painfully itchy malady. Baby oil is a good moisturizer but don’t use it in the sun or it may help fry you further.

Anesthetics.

Anesthetics such as the popular skier’s treatment Cool Blue actually kill the pain of most sunburns for a time. This is applied to the skin in the form of a spray or gelatinized rub. It is also frequently mixed with Aloe Vera as sold. Aspirin dissolved in water in small doses may be tried directly applied to affected areas.

Other medications.

Unguentine is used to treat the ache and itchiness of sunburns. There are other brand name and store brand treatments you may want to ask your pharmacist about. Mycetracin or other multiple healing ointments may help to speed healing though you will want to ask your pharmacist to be sure.

A hot shower.

A hot shower immediately after mild sunburn can bring about peeling sooner and rid you quickly of discomfort.

Vitamins taken internally or applied.

Vitamin E, one of the antioxidants, can be taken regularly as part of a daily vitamin and mineral supplement or spread as in an ointment on sunburn. Vitamin C is another antioxidant that will help prevent severe damage from sunburn and shorten its effects. Selenium is a mineral that will help fight sunburn.

Preventing further sunburn while you heal.

To protect the eyes and the area around the eyes, try placing thin slices of fresh cucumber over closed eyelids when lounging in the sun. The cucumber will absorb all the ultraviolet light and keep the eyes safe and cool.

How do I get healthy looking skin?

Monday, November 5th, 2007

You can have younger looking skin at any age. Here is how to undo skin damage as a result of too much sun exposure.

Freckles are cute across a little girls nose, but when you are not a kid anymore, freckles can turn into brown splotches on your face. Are these little splotches freckles or age spots? Minimizing their appearance in either case is easy.

As our skin ages the dermis tries hard to protect itself from the suns’ burning rays and increases its production of melanin this leaves brown splotches on the skin. The best protection against these age spots is to avoid the sun and use sunscreen.

But, if you already have splotchy skin you can use bleaching creams to fade age spots. Drug stores sell bleaching creams over the counter. These creams contain hydroquinone and go by names such as Porcelana. The hydroquinone fades brown spots in about 6 weeks time. Critics say that hydroquinone creams bought over the counter are not strong enough and that a doctor can prescribe a higher strength. Dermatologist also say that a fading cream works best when used a long with a Retin-A cream. Retin-A must be prescribed by a physician.

Alpha Hydroxy Acids can work to reduce age spots and also reduce the appearance of wrinkles. It works by using the mild acids from natural substances like fruit and milk to slough off dead skin cells.

To really refresh skin and get rid of age spots and wrinkles use a combination of all of the above. A topical cocktail of Retin-A, hydroquinone and Alpha Hydroxy Acid.

If creams are not getting rid of your skin problems several procedures can be done by your dermatologist.

Skin Peels: A doctor uses a 50 precent solution of salicylic acid. The problem spot blisters and peels off within two days. A single treatment runs about $350.00 it is very effective but takes several weeks to stop blistering and peeling.

Freeze out age spots. A dermatologist can freeze age spots with liquid nitrogen. Pain is surprisingly minimal. This treatment can have side effects in some people. It can leave scarring or a white spot in place of the brown spot.

Laser treatment on age spots destroys the cells making the excess pigmentation. New normally functioning pigment cells move back into that area. This method works best on one isolated brown spot. Laser treatment is generally not painful.

How to get healthy skin

Monday, November 5th, 2007

A glowing, smooth skin is one of the first things you notice about an attractive, well-groomed person. But looking neat and attractive is easier when you are healthy. You can keep your body healthy with responsible hygiene. Hygiene is a set of healthful practices that help prevent disease. Hygiene includes good health habits, such as eating a variety of foods, exercising, getting enough rest, and keeping your body clean. You hygiene program should also include careful choices of grooming products. Many of them may have chemicals that can irritate the skin. Preventing and properly treating skin infections and disorders, as well as avoiding overexposure to the sun are important considerations.

Cleanliness is also a must. Regular washing of the face with warm water and soap removes oil, sweat, dirt, skin scales, and bacteria. Dry skin may benefit from soap with a cream base. Sensitive skin may require the use of scent-free or non-allergenic soap. Plenty of water should be used to rinse away the soap.

Since the body is constantly excreting oil and perspiration, regular bathing is important. A daily bath or shower is essential to good health as well as for social reasons. Body odor develops in the absence of bathing. Deodorants and antiperspirants help to eliminate or prevent perspiration.

Many creams and lotions are available to cleanse, lubricate, and moisturize the skin. They are especially helpful for people who have excessively dry skin that is sensitive to soap.

The oil glands of the skin may become overactive, clogging the pores with oil. Oil and dirt that collect in pores produce blackheads. Washing the face regularly removes surface dirt and helps to prevent blackheads. People whose skin tends to be oily may find it necessary to wash the face several times a day. To close the pores after washing, apply cold towels and rubbing alcohol.

Gentle pressure after washing can remove most blackheads. However, this should be done carefully, without squeezing. Hard squeezing results in bruised skin tissue and may force dirt and bacteria into the pores, causing infection. Stubborn blackheads can be safely removed with a specially designed instrument. This instrument should only be used by a physician or some other person trained in its use.

Overexposure to the sun hastens again of the skin. Skin cells become dry and wrinkled and lose their elasticity. Oil glands become dry and blood vessels near the surface of the skin increase in size.

Oil, lotions, creams, or other suntan preparations do not increase the speed or depth of tanning. Such preparations may help prevent dryness. they may permit long exposure to the sun without burning. They do no product a tan.

Good health produces natural attractiveness. Cosmetics can help enhance a person’s better features and minimize unattractive ones. They should be used with care, however. Cleaning is important. Cosmetics clog pores and may cause skin problems. Yesterday’s makeup is today’s dirt. Some of the ingredients in certain cosmetics may irritate sensitive skin. Change to a different type of makeup if signs of skin irritation appear.

How to care for your skin and your face

Monday, November 5th, 2007

A basic skin care routine for the face is a lifelong undertaking, but should begin no later than the onset of puberty with its accompanying increase in oil production and tendency towards sensitivities and breakouts. Despite what the major cosmetic companies and marketing firms might have you believe, caring for the skin on your face is actually quite simple, consisting of three basic steps: 1) cleansing, 2) toning, and 3) moisturizing. Certainly, this basic routine can be enhanced and elaborated upon, but in the case of caring for your skin, simpler is often better.

The first step of the basic skin care routine is cleansing, or removing the dirt, makeup, oil, and general daily grime from your face. This can be done with a bar of soap, a liquid cleanser, or even a specially formulated cream (more appropriate for dry and sensitive skin types). Simply wash your face, using your choice of product and following the manufacturer’s instructions, being sure to clean all areas, and rinse well with water. Using a washcloth or special cleansing pad is an option, though the opportunity for bacterial growth on such a product leads me to encourage you to use your clean hands alone for cleansing. After thoroughly rinsing your face (splashing your face 5-10 times with warm water), pat dry with a clean, soft cloth or towel.

The second step of the routine is toning — that is, using a specially formulated toner or astringent applied to a cotton pad or ball to remove any last traces of soap, makeup, oil, and grime. Although some consider this an optional step, the evidence on the cotton pad after use convinces me that this step is effective and necessary. It is very important to choose a product that is well suited to your skin, as there is a much wider range of strengths in toners than there is in cleansers. Pay particular attention to the amount of alcohol in a toner, keeping in mind that certain types of alcohol can be very drying to the skin and are generally recommended only in products for combination or oily skin types.

The third step of the routine is moisturizing, or replenishing the natural moisture that your skin loses through cleansing and daily life. Again, different skin types will require different types of moisturizers, but even oily skin types will benefit from the use of such a product. (Keep in mind that oil and water are not the same thing, and look for an oil-free or oil-control moisturizer if your skin is oily.) Dot on cheeks, nose, chin, and forehead, and blend gently and thoroughly, taking care not to pull or tug at the skin.

This basic three-step skin care routine should be followed twice a day, once upon waking up and once before going to bed. Extremely oily skin types may benefit from an additional gentle cleansing midday, but beware that overcleaning oily skin may result in even greater oil production. As remarkable and durable a human organ as it is, the skin is delicate in its own way, and if abused, will react with breakouts, rashes, and other signs that it’s being mistreated.

Additional treatments may be appropriate depending upon your skin type. Scrubs or other exfoliants, which can be used anywhere from once a week up to once a day as long as the product is not too abrasive and the application is gentle, serve to slough off dead skin cells, thereby making skin clearer, with less of a tendency towards breakouts and blotchiness.

Masks, which may be used as frequently as a couple of times a week or as infrequently as once every month or two, are formulated to treat everything from very dry to very oily skin. They may provide an intensive moisture treatment, a deep cleansing experience, or simply a gentle, aromatherapeutic cleansing boost.

Eye creams, which are available in very light and sheer or very thick and creamy formulas, are appropriate for even the dry skinned teenager, but find their most appreciative audience in those age 30 and older.

Topical, over the counter acne treatments, such as those containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid, can be highly effective in reducing the duration and redness of a pimple or blemish, though they must be used strictly according to the manufacturer’s or your dermatologist’s directions.

An additional treatment product necessary for those of all ages and skin types is sunscreen. For the face, an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 is generally considered the minimum required to guard against risk of sun damage, skin cancer, premature aging, and wrinkling. And it is important to find a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays, as each type does its own damage. Often, facial moisturizers include sunscreens of SPF 15 and above, but if your particular brand of moisturizer does not, simply apply your sunscreen separately.

Anti-Aging Skin Care Top Nine Tips

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Many people are looking for techniques and regimes to apply in order to benefit from anti-aging treatments.

There are so many products, so many drugs, so many treatments and too much advice! What is required are some simple tips for one to follow that will give the required anti-aging effects on your skin in the long term.

In my work in the anti-aging field, I have found nine top tips that will help you to reduce the effects of aging on your skin.

Keep out of the sun for extended periods and avoid burning and tanning. Use sunscreen daily - nothing can increase the aged look more than too much sunshine. Remember that thin, white cotton shirts may not protect the skin from the harmful effects of the sun.

Get at least eight hours of sleep per day. Much is still unknown about the sleep process, but what is known is that the body appears to undergo a self-renewal process. Signs of aging are observed in those not getting the right amount of sleep. Examples include bags around the eyes as this is one of the most fragile parts of the body.

Use a prescription retinoid - these are scientifically proven creams on the market that are derivatives of vitamin A. They help production of collagen.

Exercise regularly - every day if possible. Skin is a living organ of cells, water and blood. Your entire system, including your skin and its youthful appearance, will benefit from regular exercise.

Stop smoking. Smoking causes destruction of the skin by reducing the quality of blood circulation to it giving rise to a dull color and wrinkles. Starving your body of oxygen and filling it with chemicals will cause aging. If you are serious about effective anti- aging skin care, you should strongly consider stopping or at least cutting down.

Drink eight glasses of water per day. Not just any water, put purified, distilled or spring water should be drunk. The body is composed mainly of water and uses it as a filtration medium. You should assist your body in ridding it of its toxins, thus reducing the effects of aging.

Weight loss. If you are overweight you are putting a great strain on your body, which cannot operate at its optimum. You should aim to lose weight, allowing the body to operate at an optimum level and hence keeping to a mimimum, some inevitable signs of aging.

Alcohol and stimulants - caffeine, alcohol and other stimulants and chemicals should be avoided and consumed only in moderation. These unnatural levels of chemicals in the bloodstream lead to a less than efficient operation of the body and hence give rise to aging.

Avoid stress and stressful situations. Stress has been implicated in many conditions of the skin. It can result in paleness, pimples, flaking of the skin and hair loss. Learn how to relax from stressful situations with approriate relaxation techniques.

Acne And The Importance Of Skin Care

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Skin care is important, especially if you have acne. One of the secrets for keeping acne under control is maintaining the healthy skin. This means keeping the skin clean and protecting it from sources of damage like sunshine and harsh cosmetics.

- Cleaning the Skin
Use a gentle soap or specialized skin cleaner for washing the face once or twice a day. Do not scrub the skin as it will aggravate the acne. Use a soft cloth to moisten the face and then apply the cleanser to all areas from the hairline to the neck. Rinse the cleanser with plenty of water and pat your face drive with a soft towel.

If you have very oily skin, you may need to use an astringent, but it must be used with care. Only apply it to the parts of the face which are most oily and discontinue use if your skin becomes irritated. It is best to consult with a dermatologist if you feel you need to use an astringent.

Hair care is also an important part of skin care. Shampoo your hair two or three times a week and try to keep it off your face as much as possible. Those with oily hair may need to wash their hair once a day.

- Protect Your Skin from the Sun
A suntan may dry out the skin and make your acne less noticeable but this is only temporary. As your skin becomes accustomed to sun exposure, the acne will flare up once again.

- Choose Makeup with Care
The best choice for good skin care is to wear no makeup at all, but if you feel you must wear makeup choose some that will not clog the pores.

- Shaving
Try both electric razors and safety razors to see which is more comfortable. Don’t use safety razors with dull blades. You may have to shave around blemishes to avoid cutting them and be sure to soften the beard as much as possible with water and shaving cream. If you happen have a lot of breakouts, perhaps it is best to skip shaving that day.

- Avoid Touching the Skin
Try to avoid touching your face as much as possible. Hands can spread germs over greater areas of your skin.

Acne can be brought under control. Medications are a great help in clearing up the skin and combating the bacteria, but be sure to take good care of your skin as well. Here are some acne treatments that you should consider.

Does Anti Wrinkle Cream Really Work?

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

Wrinkles are signs of old age and for anyone who gives great value to beauty, wrinkles are simply upsetting. The first thing one would want to do is to get rid of those ugly lines and creases on her skin. If you are one of those who want to counter natural aging process and maintain a youthful glow on your face, you are probably thinking of buying an anti-wrinkle cream by now.

Anti-wrinkle cream and other anti-aging products are saturating the market nowadays and lots of people are patronizing them—men and women alike, young and old. Who doesn’t like to look younger and more beautiful, anyway? Even men now are conscious about the way they look and so many anti wrinkle cream advertisements nowadays aim at the men, too. They are usually marketed as part of grooming and skin care kits for men.

Apart from good looks, however, people use anti wrinkle creams for many other reasons. For one, an anti-wrinkle cream may be one’s solution to finding a job that demands an attractive and youthful appearance. Perhaps you’re dreaming of Hollywood but are less confident because of those ugly wrinkles that appeared too early in your life—an anti-wrinkle cream can do the trick for you. Moreover, it’s a lot cheaper to buy an anti-wrinkle cream rather than to avail of expensive cosmetic treatments like plastic surgery or even botox injection.

With all the anti-aging products available in the market though, it’s so hard to pick one that can give you your desired results. Each product promises to reduce or prevent wrinkles caused by aging, but then again, you can never be too sure which one really works—or do they all really work?

The answer is yes; however, effects of each anti-wrinkle cream vary. Some anti wrinkle cream and other beauty products may provide major changes to your skin while others only have a very little effect on the skin. Also, there are products that work effectively and quickly while others don’t. But in reality, no anti-wrinkle cream has really given a permanent rejuvenating effect as aging is a natural process nothing can really totally defy.

What an anti-wrinkle cream really does is it hides those ugly wrinkles and moisturizes your skin so you can achieve a more beautiful face. It has ingredients like oils, collagen and silicon dioxide whose molecules are smaller than those of the skin. They penetrate through the wrinkles and deflect light; thereby, making the wrinkles invincible to the naked eye.

An anti-wrinkle cream actually makes the aging process more pleasing and agreeable to you. It helps you cope with aging more gracefully by making you feel beautiful. And that great feeling about oneself actually does the work of making you look good. Remember that real beauty shines from within, so whatever kind of anti-wrinkle cream or anti-aging product it is that you use, always feel good about yourself and wear a smile no matter what life brings—only then you can be beautiful in every sense of the word.
